Bruce McLaren, an engineer, and racer, qualified tenth in his Formula 1 vehicle at a Monaco race in May 1966. He collected McLaren Racing’s first points two months later at the Formula 1 Grand Prix.
He started racing in a modified 1929 Austin Ulster that he and his father built from pieces. The future racing car designer enjoyed every step of the repair procedure.
At 22, Bruce won his maiden Grand Prix, shattering a 40-year-old record. For the next decade, he was one of the world’s top race drivers.
Bruce was one of just two persons to win the Grand Prix with his own vehicle. His race vehicles were successful beyond F1. At 32 years old, Bruce was killed in a test drive at Goodwood in June 1970 in his M8D automobile. But his name and legacy lives on.
