WHAT MAKES LOTUS DIFFERENT

Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman, the founder of Lotus, created his first race vehicle, an Austin Seven special trials car with the registration number OX 9292, when he was a structural engineering student at University College in London in 1948.

Chapman constructed his second trials car while on RAF leave. It later won the Wrotham Cup and was the first Lotus that could be driven on the road.

The Mark 3 was the first vehicle Chapman produced to be referred to be a Lotus. Only Colin and Hazel Chapman are aware of the real meaning of the name. The Mark 3 was also the first Lotus circuit racer, with a peak speed of 90 mph and a 0 to 50 time of 6.6 seconds.

With a £50 loan, Colin Chapman founded the Lotus Engineering Company in 1952. In 1954 came Team Lotus. The Mark 8 was an instant hit and gave Lotus access to international racing.

In 1956 Lotus Eleven Model names starting with an “E” become custom. The Lotus Seven and The Elite Lotus arrived in 1957. Caterham is still producing a variation of the Seven today. The Elite was decades ahead of its time with a glass fibre monocoque chassis and a drag coefficient of just 0.29. At Le Mans, the Lotus Eleven took first place in the 750cc Class of the Index of Performance.

Group Lotus PLC was founded in 1958 and Lotus relocated to a newly constructed facility in Cheshunt in 1959. A year later saw a Lotus 18 the first Lotus with a mid-engine and the first to triumph in a Formula 1 Grand Prix. Stirling Moss, May 29. Monaco.

The Lotus 21 in 1961 became the first vehicle from Team Lotus to triumph in a World Championship race. The revolutionary Type 25 was the first Formula 1 chassis made of aluminium. Jim Clark guided the team to four Grand Prix victories. The Elan is currently regarded as one of the greatest pure driver’s cars of all time and was produced until 1973. In the Lotus Type 25, Jim Clark won the Formula One Drivers’ World Championship in 1963. The First Formula One Constructors’ World Championship was won by Team Lotus. The British Saloon Car Championship was also won by the Lotus Cortina (Type 28). It was Chapman’s first Indycar, a Lotus Type 29. Jim Clark was the driver, and it came in second in the Indy 500.

Jim Clark confronted the globe in 1965. In the Lotus Type 33, he won another F1 World Championship double. In the Lotus Type 38, he won the Indianapolis 500.

In 1966 Lotus moved to a new facility in Hethel, Norfolk, which was erected on the site of an old US Air Force installation. The engine was used as a structural part for the first time in the Type 43 F1 vehicle. The mid-engined Lotus Europa launched after the Elan S3 drophead (Type 46).

The Lotus Type 49 in 1967 became the first Formula One vehicle to use the Cosworth-Ford DFV V8 engine. the Lotus Elan +2’s take-off (Type 50).

Jim Clark tragically passed away during a Formula 2 race in Hockenheim in 1968. In the Lotus 49, Graham Hill triumphed in the Formula One Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championships. Formula One saw the debut of aerofoil wings.

The 126 horsepower ‘Big Valve’ Elan Sprint debuted in 1970 from Lotus. Along with other improvements, the Lotus Type 72 brought mid-mounted radiators and multi-element wings to Formula 1. Team Lotus won another F1 Constructors’ World Championship. Even though Jochen Rindt unfortunately passed away at Monza with 4 rounds remaining, he still managed to win the F1 Drivers’ World Championship.
